Managing Director - trade press report 2006-
Steve Roberts first walked through Covent Garden as a child with his father Mr Edward Roberts. He was immediately taken by the general bustle and activity of the trade and there the seeds were planted for a fruitful career. Now nearly thirty years later he finds himself at the forefront of the trade as Managing Director of Westminster Produce Ltd.
Following the completion of his education he gained invaluable experience in retail; diligently learning the ropes of the business whilst discovering the customers needs and the basics of supply and demand retailing.
Things soon developed and Covent Garden came calling, as a salesman on W.Braund Ltd having to endure 2.00 am starts; once again the gloves were off as he was working with three of the best salesman in the market and had to try extremely hard to keep pace, despite this his genuine feel for the business shone through.
Opportunity arose within a division of Fyffes PLC, Steve took up this position with much relish and after a year or so Fyffes also saw his flair and potential and promoted him to their main import arm, at the time Hart + Friedmann, firstly working out of Wisbech, then subsequently from the Park Royal office.
After developing further contacts and now aged 25 he felt he needed further challenges and this came with the highly responsible and prestigious position of Sales Manager for Cortes Ltd. With direct contacts in Spain and the Canaries he forged relationships which today are still in place. With the support of a great company he went from strength to strength and developed direct deliveries from grower to customer helping to established Cortes as a premier importer.
Relocation of the Cortes office caused Steve some time for thought; returning to education he undertook a degree in Modern Languages majoring in Spanish as a tool to aid his career.
After reviewing his options he successfully applied for the post of Wholesale Business Unit Manager with Thames Fruit Ltd; there under the excellent guidance of Emilio Teresa he developed a secure section of a multi million pound business and utilised the systems available to their maximum. For six years he travelled to Kent to work for one of the leading importers of produce in the World.
Having faced all of these challenges head on, the only thing left was to completely take up the reigns and go it alone; would having the experience of working for some of the best companies in the trade be enough? Well four years on, and Westminster are going from strength to strength with even more diverse activities.
Steve says himself "Being Managing Director does give one the freedom to select ones own direction, and eventual destination; -it is better to be the head of a mouse than the tail of a lion".
